Leather does not get in the way of MagSafe. Whether a case works with MagSafe depends on one thing: is there a ring of magnets built into the shell under the leather? Below: how it works, which of our cases have the magnet, and what to know about cards, chargers and older iPhones.
Yes, a leather iPhone case works with MagSafe if it has a magnet ring built into its shell. With that ring, MagSafe chargers, wallets and stands snap on and line up through the leather, and you charge with the case on. A case that only says "wireless charging compatible" will charge on a pad, but it will not hold a magnetic accessory in place.
- The magnet ring inside the shell is what makes a case MagSafe-ready. The leather on top does not block it.
- "Wireless charging compatible" and "MagSafe-ready" are two different promises. Look for the word magnet or MagSafe on the product page.
- MagSafe is built into iPhone 12 and later. The iPhone SE models and the iPhone 16e do not have it.
- Soft, oil-rich leathers can show a faint ring where a MagSafe charger sits every night. It is a mark in the finish, not damage.
- Keep cards with a magnetic stripe away from the magnet ring.
How does MagSafe work through a case?
MagSafe is a ring of magnets around the wireless charging coil on the back of the iPhone. When a MagSafe charger or accessory comes close, the magnets pull it into the right position and hold it there. For charging, that position matters: the coil in the charger has to sit over the coil in the phone.
A case adds distance between the phone and the accessory. Through a thin case with no magnets, the hold is weak or missing, depending on the thickness. A MagSafe-ready case solves this by carrying its own magnet ring inside the shell, lined up with the ring in the phone. The accessory snaps to the case, and the case is already aligned with the phone.
Does leather block MagSafe?
No. Leather is not magnetic, so a magnetic field passes through it the way it passes through plastic or fabric. What weakens a magnetic hold is distance and the lack of a magnet on the case side, not the material on the surface.
So the useful question is not "leather or not". It is "is there a magnet ring in the shell, and how much material sits on top of it". That is why our MagSafe cases are built in layers: a rigid shell, a magnet ring inside the shell, and the leather over it.

The Ferrara is a good example. Under the leather is a rigid PC shell with a built-in magnet for MagSafe charging and accessories. On top is Italian full-grain Crazy Horse cowhide from the Mastrotto tannery. Crazy Horse is a finish, not the animal: the hide is cow, and the waxed finish is what lets it lighten and darken with use.
Wallet-style folios are different: a cover and card slots add layers, and some have no magnet at all. Check the product page before you assume one will hold a charger.
MagSafe-ready or wireless charging compatible: what is the difference?
These two phrases do not mean the same thing.
- Wireless charging compatible: the phone charges on a standard wireless pad with the case on. You place it by hand, and nothing holds it in position. If it slides off the coil, it stops charging.
- MagSafe-ready (built-in magnet): the phone charges the same way, and the case also snaps to MagSafe chargers, stands, wallets and car mounts, which hold the phone in the right place.

A wireless-compatible case is enough if you only charge on a flat pad at night. If you use a stand on your desk, a mount in the car or a MagSafe wallet, you need the magnet ring.
Which of our cases work with MagSafe?
This table uses the wording on each product page. If a page does not mention a magnet, we do not list the case as MagSafe-ready.
| Case | Surface | Magnet ring | What the product page says |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ferrara | Italian full-grain Crazy Horse cowhide (Mastrotto) | Yes | Rigid PC shell with built-in magnet for MagSafe charging and accessories |
| Torino | Full-grain Oil-Wax leather | Yes | Full-cover PC shell with built-in MagSafe magnetic ring |
| Napoli | Italian Nappa leather | Yes | MagSafe-ready, for chargers and magnetic accessories |
| Parma | Full-grain Pull-Up cowhide | Yes | Magnets in the rigid core; frequent MagSafe charging may leave a ring mark |
| Copenhagen | Vegetable-tanned Italian cowhide (Conceria 800) | See note | Supports compatible magnetic accessories; the page does not use the word MagSafe |
| Monaco GT | Italian Alcantara (a microfibre, not leather) | Yes | Polycarbonate core with built-in magnet for MagSafe alignment |
| Lucca | Full-grain Oil-Wax leather | No | Wireless charging with the case on |
| Siena | Full-grain Crazy Horse cowhide | No | Compatible with standard wireless chargers |
| Portofino | Leather over PC and TPU | No | Wireless charging compatible |
| Milano Lanyard | Full-grain leather | No | Wireless charging with the strap removed and the phone flat; no built-in magnet |

Napoli is the quietest of the magnetic cases. Monaco GT is the choice if you want the magnet but not leather.

Which iPhones have MagSafe?
MagSafe arrived with the iPhone 12. Since then the main models, including mini, Plus, Pro and Pro Max, have the magnet ring. The exceptions are budget models: the iPhone SE (2nd and 3rd generation) and the iPhone 16e do not have MagSafe. If your phone is an SE or an "e" model, check Apple's technical specifications before you buy a magnetic accessory.
On iPhone 11 and earlier, the phone has no magnet ring and does not support MagSafe charging. iPhone 8 and later can still charge on a standard wireless pad.
Not sure which model you have? Open Settings, then General, then About, and read Model Name.
Will a MagSafe charger mark a leather case?
It can. A charger that sits on the same spot every night presses on the leather and warms it a little. On a soft, oil-rich leather, that can leave a faint circle. The Parma page says it plainly: frequent use of MagSafe chargers may leave a visible circular mark because of its oil-rich finish.
It is a mark in the finish, not a fault, and on leathers that develop patina it tends to blend in. If you want the surface to stay as even as possible, you have three options:
- Charge on a flat wireless pad some nights instead of a MagSafe puck.
- Choose a leather that moves more as a whole, such as Crazy Horse, where light marks tend to blend in with warmth and use.
- Choose Alcantara, which keeps its texture and colour over time.
Our guide to how leather patina forms explains why some leathers absorb marks and others show them.

Are MagSafe cases safe for cards and wallets?
A MagSafe wallet attaches to the magnet ring in the case, the same way a charger does. Two cautions apply.
- Magnetic stripes: strong magnets can wipe cards that store data on a stripe, such as some hotel key cards. Keep those away from the ring.
- Nothing between phone and charger: do not leave a card, key fob or badge between the phone and a MagSafe charger. Apple gives the same advice.
How to check a case before and after you buy
- Find your exact model in Settings, General, About. The case must be cut for that model, or the magnet ring will not sit where the phone's ring is.
- Read the product page for "built-in magnet", "magnetic ring" or "MagSafe-ready". "Wireless charging compatible" on its own means no magnet.
- When the case arrives, bring a MagSafe charger close to the back. It should pull itself to the centre and the iPhone should show that it is charging.
- Give it a gentle tug. The charger should stay put. If it slides off easily, the case or the model is wrong.
How to choose a MagSafe leather case
Start with how you charge, then the leather.
- You use a stand, car mount or MagSafe wallet every day: choose a case with a built-in ring, such as Ferrara, Torino, Napoli or Monaco GT. See our MagSafe stands.
- You want leather that changes the most: Ferrara, in Crazy Horse cowhide, scuffs, darkens and softens into patina.
- You want a quiet, smooth look: Napoli in Nappa.
- You want a surface that stays the same: Monaco GT in Alcantara. Our comparison of leather, Alcantara and vegan leather covers the trade-offs.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to take the case off to charge?
No. A MagSafe-ready case charges with the case on, on a MagSafe charger or a standard wireless pad. A wireless-compatible case charges on a standard pad with the case on.
Will a MagSafe-ready case work with Qi2 chargers?
Usually, yes. Qi2 is built on the same magnetic alignment idea as MagSafe, so a case with a magnet ring generally snaps to Qi2 chargers too.
Can I use a MagSafe car mount with a leather case?
Yes, if the case has a built-in magnet ring. Test the hold on a short drive before you rely on it on rough roads.
Will MagSafe leave a mark on my leather case?
It can leave a faint circle on soft, oil-rich leathers if the charger sits on the same spot every night. It is a mark in the finish, not damage.
My iPhone is older than the iPhone 12. Can I use MagSafe?
Not fully. The phone has no MagSafe hardware. iPhone 8 and later can still charge on a standard wireless pad.
