How to care for a leather phone case, by leather type

A good leather case needs less care than most people think. Most care mistakes come from doing too much: an alcohol wipe to disinfect it, a household spray, a radiator to dry it after rain. Leather that is left alone, handled every day and wiped now and then usually ages well.

Below is the routine that works for every leather case, then the differences between our finishes: Crazy Horse (a finish on cowhide, not the animal), oil-wax, pull-up, Nappa and vegetable-tanned. Alcantara and vegan leather come last, because they need different care.

Short answer

Wipe it with a soft, dry or slightly damp cloth, let it dry naturally, and keep alcohol, harsh cleaners and direct heat away from it. On waxed and oiled leathers, rub small scratches with your thumb. Conditioner is rarely needed, and never on vegan leather.

Key takeaways
  • A soft cloth does almost all of the work. Less is more.
  • Never use alcohol, disinfectant wipes or household cleaners on leather.
  • A little water is fine. Heat is the real enemy, so let a wet case dry at room temperature.
  • Waxed and oiled leathers (Crazy Horse, oil-wax, pull-up) let you rub small scratches away with the warmth of your hand.
  • Nappa wants a dry cloth and nothing else. Alcantara and vegan leather, which is synthetic, follow their own rules.

What is the basic routine for any leather case?

This is the routine most of our leather product pages describe, with two practical additions.

  1. Wipe the outside with a soft, dry cloth whenever it looks dusty.
  2. For marks, use a slightly damp cloth, with water only. Wipe gently, then let it dry naturally.
  3. Take the case off now and then. Dust and grit can collect between the case and the phone and, over time, rub against the back of the iPhone.
  4. Clean the lining. Tap out any dust and wipe the inside with a dry cloth. Most of our leather cases have a soft microfibre lining for exactly this reason: to reduce micro-scratches on the back of the phone.
  5. Let everything dry fully before you put the phone back in.

What should you never use on a leather phone case?

  • Alcohol and hand sanitiser. They dry leather out and can strip its finish. If you have just used sanitiser, let your hands dry before you pick up the case.
  • Disinfectant wipes, wet wipes and household cleaners. They contain solvents and detergents that leather does not need.
  • Nail polish remover or any solvent. It can remove colour in seconds.
  • Direct heat. Radiators, hair dryers and a car dashboard in summer sun all dry leather out and can leave it stiff.
  • Soaking. Light rain is fine. Submerging is not.

How do you care for each type of leather?

The basics above apply to every leather. What changes is how each finish handles scratches, oils and water. If you are not sure which finish your case has, our guide to the leathers we use explains how to tell them apart.

Leather Everyday clean Small scratches Watch out for Our pieces
Crazy Horse Soft dry or slightly damp cloth Rub with your thumb Heat, alcohol Ferrara, Siena
Oil-wax Soft dry or slightly damp cloth Rub; bends lighten, then settle Heat, alcohol Lucca, Torino
Pull-up Soft dry or slightly damp cloth Warmth of your hands MagSafe ring mark, long soaks Parma, Ivrea, Cremona
Nappa Soft dry cloth Leave them; they do not rub out Oils, alcohol, harsh cleaners Napoli
Vegetable-tanned Soft cloth, no soaking They become part of the patina Water marks, direct heat Copenhagen

Crazy Horse

The easiest leather to live with. Its heavy wax finish lets light scratches blend or "heal" with warmth and use. Wipe it, rub marks with your thumb, and let it darken. Regular use deepens the colour and the patina. See the Ferrara and the Siena.

Oil-wax

Treat it like Crazy Horse, a little more gently. The surface is smoother, so the sheen builds where you hold it. Regular use softens the leather and enhances the patina.

Pull-up

Small scratches can often be softened with the warmth of your hands. One thing to know: on an oil-rich finish like our Parma, frequent use of MagSafe chargers may leave a visible circular mark on the leather. If you want the back to stay as even as possible, keep that in mind. For the Cremona strap, wipe with a dry cloth and take it off before swimming or the shower.

Nappa

Nappa is smooth and even, and that is how you keep it. Wipe gently with a soft, dry cloth, and avoid alcohol and harsh cleaners. Do not try to rub out or oil away a scratch: on a smooth surface, oils can leave a darker patch that is harder to live with than the mark. See the Napoli.

Vegetable-tanned

Wipe gently, avoid soaking and direct heat, and let damp leather dry naturally. Vegetable-tanned leather darkens with light and handling, so a case left in the sun will deepen faster. Marks and processing traces become part of its character over time. See the Copenhagen.

How do you remove scratches and marks?

It depends on what the mark is.

  • Light scratches on waxed or oiled leather. Rub firmly with your thumb in small circles. The warmth and pressure move the wax and oils over the mark, and it fades or darkens into the patina.
  • Deeper scratches. Leave them. On Crazy Horse, the scratch you make in week one becomes part of the finish by month three.
  • Oil and grease from hand cream, sunscreen or food. Blot straight away with a dry cloth. Do not rub it in, and do not add water or soap.
  • Ink and dye. Dark denim can transfer dye onto light leather, and ink is hard to lift. Do not use solvents. Prevention works better than cure: keep light cognac leather out of new dark jeans.

What should you do if your leather case gets wet?

  1. Take the phone out of the case.
  2. Blot the water with a soft, dry cloth. Do not rub.
  3. Let the case dry at room temperature, away from radiators, hair dryers and direct sun.
  4. Once it is dry, flex it gently and rub the surface with your thumb to bring the finish back.
  5. Only if it looks pale and dry over a large area, consider a small amount of conditioner, as explained below.

Never try to speed up drying with heat. That is what turns a little rain into stiff, cracked leather.

Should you use leather conditioner on a phone case?

Usually not. Our product pages recommend a soft cloth and nothing more, and waxed and oiled leathers already carry their own oils and waxes. Conditioner also changes leather: most products darken it, some leave the surface slippery, and they can mark unevenly.

The exception is leather that has clearly dried out: pale, stiff and dull over a large area, often after heat or a lot of sun. Then a small amount of neutral, colourless conditioner is reasonable. Test it on a hidden spot first, apply it thinly, and buff off the excess. Avoid it on Nappa unless the product is made for that leather.

How do you clean Alcantara and vegan leather cases?

Monaco GT: Alcantara is not leather, and it is cleaned differently.

Alcantara is an Italian microfibre, not leather. For our Monaco GT case, spot clean with a soft cloth and a little mild soap if needed, and avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive scrubbing. For the Monza strap, wipe with a damp cloth and let it air-dry. For marks, use a soft brush and a little mild soap, then blot dry. Do not machine wash it, and keep it away from direct heat.

Vegan leather is synthetic (PU), not hide. Wipe our Lecce case with a damp cloth and dry it. Use no conditioner and no leather balm: vegan leather does not absorb them, and oil left on the surface only attracts dust.

What are the most common care mistakes?

  • Drying a wet case with a hair dryer or on a radiator. Heat is the fastest way to stiffen and crack leather.
  • Disinfecting with alcohol wipes. They dry the surface and can strip the finish.
  • Conditioning too often. More product does not mean more protection. It means a darker, slippery case.
  • Trying to clean off patina. Patina is not dirt. Read what patina is before you try to remove it.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I clean my leather phone case?

Wipe it with a dry cloth whenever it looks dusty. Take it off and clean the inside from time to time, especially if you carry it in pockets with sand or lint.

Can I use disinfectant or baby wipes on a leather case?

No. Avoid alcohol, wipes and harsh cleaners. A slightly damp cloth with water only, followed by natural drying, is the safe option.

Should I use leather conditioner on my phone case?

Usually not. Use it only if the leather has clearly dried out, apply very little, and test it on a hidden spot first. Never use it on vegan leather.

Can a leather case get wet?

Light rain is fine. Blot it, take the phone out and let the case dry at room temperature. Avoid soaking it and never dry it with heat.

How do I remove a scratch from a leather case?

On Crazy Horse, oil-wax and pull-up leather, rub the scratch firmly with your thumb. The wax and oils move over the mark. On Nappa, leave it alone.

Can I wear a leather Apple Watch strap in the shower?

No. Take a leather strap such as our Cremona off before swimming or showering. For workouts, an Alcantara strap copes better with sweat. See our watch straps.
