You come home, and your pockets empty themselves onto the nearest surface: keys on the hall table, a watch by the sink, coins on the desk, the phone wherever it lands. In the morning you search three rooms for the same four things.
A valet tray solves that with one shallow tray in one place. This guide explains what it is, where it works best, how to choose between leather and vegan leather, and which size to buy. We make two: the Padova in Crazy Horse cowhide and the Sorrento in vegan leather, a synthetic material.
A valet tray is a small, shallow tray where you empty your pockets: keys, watch, coins, cards, earbuds and glasses. It keeps them in one place on a hall table, nightstand or desk. Choose leather if you want it to age with use, vegan leather if you want colour and a wipe-clean surface. A tray of around 20 cm takes a watch and a wallet together.
- A valet tray is a catch-all for what you carry. Its job is to end the morning search.
- Put it where your day starts and ends: the entryway, the nightstand or the desk.
- The Padova is Crazy Horse cowhide, in two sizes: 175 × 115 × 33 mm and 215 × 160 × 40 mm.
- The Sorrento is vegan leather, not animal hide, in three flat sizes (15, 20 and 25 cm square) and eleven colours.
- Both unsnap at four corners and lie flat, so they travel in a suitcase.
What is a valet tray?
A valet tray is a shallow tray with low walls, made to hold the small things you carry every day. It is sometimes called a catch-all tray, a pocket tray or a key tray. The shape is simple on purpose: a flat base so nothing rolls, and walls high enough to stop a coin sliding off.

The name comes from the valet, a man's personal attendant responsible for his clothes and appearance. The tray does a small part of that job. It keeps the watch, the keys and the wallet together, ready for the morning.
Our Padova is a good example of the classic form. It is cut from Crazy Horse cowhide, and its edge is stitched rather than glued. Crazy Horse is a finish, not the animal: the hide is cow, treated with wax so it lightens where it bends and darkens where it is handled.
What is a valet tray used for?
Mostly for what goes in and out of your pockets:

- Keys, so they are by the door when you leave.
- A watch, laid on a surface instead of a hard shelf or a tiled sink edge.
- Coins and cards, which otherwise end up in three different places.
- Earbuds, a ring or a pair of glasses, small things that are easy to lose.
- The phone, if the tray is large enough.
Where it sits matters more than what it holds. The Padova page lists four places: desk, entryway, nightstand and travel. On a hall table it is the last stop before the door. On a nightstand it holds the watch overnight.
The Sorrento is described the same way: a soft-sided tray for keys, a watch, coins and a pair of glasses. It comes in eleven colours, which helps when the tray is on a hall table, the first thing a guest sees.
Leather or vegan leather: which valet tray should you choose?
The choice is about how you want the tray to look in a year. Real leather changes with use. Vegan leather stays as it arrived.
The Padova is genuine Crazy Horse cowhide. The wax finish shifts as it is handled, so marks lighten and then settle back. Grain, shade and small marks vary from piece to piece. Over months, the tray you own stops looking like the one in the photo.
The Sorrento is vegan leather: a synthetic, coated surface, not animal hide. The product page describes it as a PVC-coated surface. It does not age or take on a patina. It wipes clean with a damp cloth, it does not stain the way hide can, and it comes in colours that leather rarely does, such as mint, lilac and orange. Our vegan leather collection gathers the other synthetic pieces.

What size valet tray do you need?
Start with what you empty from your pockets. Keys, coins and earbuds fit almost any tray. A watch and a wallet together need a larger one.
The two trays are measured differently, so read the figures with care. The Padova page gives each size assembled, with the height of its walls. The Sorrento page gives each size unfolded, lying flat, so the tray is smaller once its corners are snapped up. The Sorrento page does not list a wall height.
| Valet tray | Size | Dimensions on the product page | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
Padova
|
Small | 175 × 115 × 33 mm (assembled) | Beside a keyboard: keys, coins, earbuds |
Padova
|
Large | 215 × 160 × 40 mm (assembled) | A watch and a wallet together |
Sorrento
|
Small | 15 × 15 cm (unfolded) | Beside a keyboard |
Sorrento
|
Medium | 20 × 20 cm (unfolded) | Keys, coins, glasses |
Sorrento
|
Large | 25 × 25 cm (unfolded) | A watch and a wallet together |
A simple test: lay out what you carry and measure it. When in doubt, go larger. A tray that is too small becomes a pile with walls.
Why does a travel valet tray fold flat?
Because a hotel room has the same problem as your hallway, only worse. Small things on an unfamiliar nightstand are easy to leave behind at checkout.

Both of our trays use the same idea. Four metal snaps hold the corners up, and the walls with them, even under weight. Undo the snaps and the tray lies completely flat. It slips into a suitcase, then snaps back into a tray in a second when you arrive.
The Padova page calls this the whole reason it travels well, and its perimeter is sewn, not glued. The Sorrento arrives flat and takes its shape when you snap the corners, which also makes it easy to send as a gift.
Where does a valet tray go on a desk?
To one side, outside the area where you write and use the mouse. The small sizes are made for that spot: the Padova page says its small tray sits by a keyboard, and the Sorrento page says the same of its small size.

If you already have a leather desk pad, a tray in the same finish keeps the desk calm. Our Gubbio desk pad is Crazy Horse cowhide, 280 × 230 mm, with a stitched pen channel along the right edge. A small Padova beside it takes the keys and earbuds, and both age in the same direction. Pens go in the channel, keys in the tray. Browse the rest in our desk accessories.
How do you care for a valet tray?
- Padova (Crazy Horse cowhide): wipe with a dry cloth and keep it out of prolonged direct sun. A neutral leather balm once or twice a year keeps the hide supple. The page says the tray does not need more than that.
- Sorrento (vegan leather): wipe with a soft damp cloth. No solvents and no leather conditioner: a coated surface does not need feeding.
Keys and coins will leave marks on Crazy Horse. That is expected: the Padova page says the finish shifts as it is used, and that variation is the part a synthetic surface cannot reproduce. To understand what happens to the surface over time, read what leather patina is.

Looking for a present? A valet tray needs no phone model and no watch size, so it is one of the safest gifts we make. Our leather gift guide and our desk accessories put it alongside other pieces.
Frequently asked questions
What do you put in a valet tray?
The things you empty from your pockets: keys, a watch, coins, cards, earbuds, a ring or glasses. A larger tray also takes a wallet or a phone.
Where should a valet tray go?
Where your day starts and ends. A hall table, a nightstand or a desk are the usual places. A tray that folds flat can also travel.
Is the Sorrento real leather?
No. The Sorrento is vegan leather, a synthetic material with a PVC-coated surface, not animal hide. Our Padova is the tray made of real cowhide.
Is Crazy Horse leather made from horses?
No. Crazy Horse is a finish, not the animal. The Padova is cowhide treated with wax, which lightens where it bends and darkens where it is handled.
Which size takes a watch and a wallet?
The large size of either tray. The Padova Large measures 215 × 160 × 40 mm. The Sorrento Large measures 25 × 25 cm unfolded.
Can I take a valet tray when I travel?
Yes. Both the Padova and the Sorrento unsnap at four corners and lie flat in a suitcase, then snap back into a tray when you arrive.
