The five towns behind our wine carriers

Montalcino sommelier wine case in black croc-grain vegan leather on dark walnut

Every wine carrier we make is named after an Italian wine town: Radda, Conegliano, Montalcino, Pollenzo and Cormons. Each of these places did something for wine that we wanted the carrier to carry with it.

This is the story behind each name, what each carrier does, and how to choose between them. One thing first, so there is no confusion: the towns are the names of our products, our inspiration. They are not where the carriers are made.

Short answer

Our five wine carriers are named after Italian wine towns, each for one moment in wine history: the consortium founded in Radda in Chianti in 1924, Italy's first school of winemaking in Conegliano in 1876, the long wait before Brunello di Montalcino is released, the Wine Bank of Pollenzo and the Wine of Peace from Cormòns. All five carriers are vegan leather, a synthetic PU surface rather than animal hide, and none includes a bottle.

Key takeaways
  • Each name points to a real moment in Italian wine, and each story is told on that product's page.
  • The towns are our inspiration. They are not where the carriers are made.
  • All five are vegan leather (PU, synthetic), not hide. They wipe clean, need no conditioning and will not build a patina.
  • Each holds one bottle. Pollenzo also comes in a two-bottle size.
  • The bottle is never included. The carrier is the wrapping, and it stays after the wine is gone.

Why are our wine carriers named after wine towns?

Our brand is inspired by Florence, and many of our products carry Italian town names. For the wine carriers, we wanted the names to mean something specific.

A carrier exists for one moment: a bottle handed from one person to another. So we looked for places that treat a bottle the same way, as a gesture, an occasion, or something worth waiting for. Each of the five towns below has a story that fits one carrier, and each story is told on that carrier's product page.

What happened in Radda in Chianti in 1924?

In 1924, in Radda in Chianti, thirty-three winegrowers came together and founded what is recognised as Italy's first wine producers' consortium. They chose a black rooster on a gold field as their mark.

We like the restraint of it: a group of growers, and one simple mark.

Radda is a gift box for one bottle in that spirit: plain, in Cognac or Black, with contrast stitching on every edge (gold thread on Cognac, orange on Black). The bottle lies on a soft orange lining, held still by an inner strap. An envelope flap closes over it with a hidden hook-and-loop tab. Stood upright, it is square and about 34 cm tall. When the wine has been poured, it folds flat and waits in a drawer for the next bottle.

Why does Conegliano matter to Italian wine?

Conegliano sits in the hills of the Veneto. In 1876 it opened Italy's first school of winemaking. Ninety years later, in 1966, the road that leaves the town for Valdobbiadene became the country's first official wine route.

It is a town that treats a bottle as an occasion, so we gave its name to the carrier engraved with the names and the date worth remembering.

Conegliano is a tall, structured carrier for one bottle, 40 cm tall on a 9 × 9 cm base, so the bottle travels standing. A metal snap tab locks over the cut-out handle. The front is laser-engraved with the text you choose, in one of twelve styles, up to 30 characters, engraved exactly as typed. It comes in Cognac, Espresso, Black and Red, and it folds for storage between uses.

Why must Brunello di Montalcino wait before release?

Montalcino is the Tuscan hill town of Brunello. Brunello is a wine that must age for years before release. By its own rules, it cannot be sold until January of the fifth year after its harvest, after at least two years in wood.

We named our sommelier case after it, because the bottles that deserve this kind of care are the ones that have already waited.

Montalcino is a rigid case for one standard 750 ml bottle. A strap inside keeps the bottle from rolling, a metal top handle and a front latch close it with a click, and four tools sit in the lid, each in its own slot: a waiter's corkscrew, a foil cutter, an aerating pourer and a drip ring. It measures about 32.5 × 12 × 10.5 cm and weighs about 0.7 kg.

It comes in five finishes: Black Croc-Grain, Cognac, Tooled Brown, Honey, and Black & Orange. The croc grain, the tooled floral and the two-tone panels are pressed into the vegan leather surface, not grown. Some finishes carry a printed or embossed motif.

What is the Wine Bank in Pollenzo?

In Pollenzo, in Piedmont, the Wine Bank has kept bottles since 2003. Producers lay them down there to be opened years later, when they are ready.

The idea that a bottle can wait for the right evening is also the etiquette of bringing wine to dinner, which we explain in what wine to bring to a dinner party.

Pollenzo is a structured tote that stands on its own, in espresso brown with cognac sides and white stitching along every edge. It comes for one bottle (about 9.5 × 9.5 × 34 cm) or two (about 19 × 9.5 × 35 cm). A fold-over flap keeps the bottle out of sight until it is handed over, a soft black lining holds it, and two cord handles run through metal eyelets.

What is the Wine of Peace from Cormòns?

In Cormòns, in Friuli, the local winemakers' cooperative has made a "Wine of Peace" since 1985. It comes from a vineyard of more than 600 grape varieties, gathered from five continents.

It is a town that treats a bottle as a gesture, which is the whole job of a carrier. Our product is spelt Cormons, without the accent.

Cormons is our simplest carrier: one panel of vegan leather, folded around the bottle and stitched down both sides. The neck stays in view and the handle is cut from the same piece, so there are no straps to fray and no rings to rattle. It comes in two styles. The Loop Handle (41.5 × 17 × 9.5 cm) has an open V at the neck and comes in Cognac, Black, Burgundy and Orange. The Window Front (46.5 × 16 × 9.5 cm) has a slot handle and a curved window over the bottle, in Cognac, Black and Burgundy.

Conegliano Italy's first school of winemaking, 1876 Tall structured carrier One bottle, upright Laser engraving, twelve styles

Which carrier suits which gift?

  • A first dinner, or a simple thank-you: Cormons. Simple, open at the neck, with the handle cut from the same piece.
  • A formal dinner or a business gift: Radda. It reads as a gift before anyone opens it, and it looks at home on a desk.
  • A wedding, an anniversary or a date worth remembering: Conegliano, engraved with their names and the date.
  • A housewarming, or two bottles to open together: Pollenzo in the two-bottle size.
  • Someone who loves wine: Montalcino, with the tools to open and pour it.

If your bottle is unusually tall or wide, check the measurements on the product page first. All five are in our wine carriers collection.

What are the carriers made of?

All five carriers are our vegan line. The surface is vegan leather: a PU coating, which is synthetic, not animal hide. We would rather say that plainly than let the photos suggest otherwise.

The trade is simple. Vegan leather keeps its surface as it is and wipes clean with a soft, slightly damp cloth. It does not need conditioner, and none of the five should be treated with leather balm or solvents. It will not darken or build a patina the way hide does. If you want to know how patina forms on hide, our guide to leather patina explains it, and our comparison of leather, Alcantara and vegan leather sets the materials side by side.

Frequently asked questions

Do the town names tell you where the carriers come from?

No. The towns are the names of our products and the inspiration behind them. They are not a statement of where the carriers are made.

Are the wine carriers leather or vegan leather?

Vegan leather. All five have a PU-coated synthetic surface, not animal hide. They wipe clean and do not need conditioning.

Is a bottle of wine included?

No. Every carrier is sold empty. The bottles and glasses in our photos are not included.

Which carrier holds two bottles?

Pollenzo, in its two-bottle size, about 19 × 9.5 × 35 cm. The other four carriers each hold one bottle.

How do I clean a vegan leather wine carrier?

Wipe it with a soft, slightly damp cloth and let it dry. Avoid solvents and long hours in direct sun, and do not use leather conditioner: this surface does not absorb it.
