Which case fits my iPhone? How to find your exact model

Copenhagen Espresso leather case shown with three iPhone 17 Pro finishes

A phone case is cut for one iPhone model. Not one family, not one year: one model. So when a case does not fit, check the model name first: a case for a model with an almost identical name will not fit yours. This guide shows you how to find your exact model in a few seconds, why similar names do not share cases, and how to check the fit when your case arrives.

Short answer

Open Settings, tap General, then About, and read Model Name, for example "iPhone 17 Pro Max". Choose the case made for that exact model. Each iPhone has its own size, camera layout and button positions, so a case for a model with a similar name will usually not fit.

Key takeaways
  • Your exact model is in Settings, General, About, next to Model Name.
  • Pro and Pro Max are different sizes. The standard model and the Pro of the same year have different cameras.
  • The same model name a year apart, such as 16 Pro and 17 Pro, is a different phone: cameras and buttons move.
  • Screen and camera protectors are also cut per model.
  • Buying a gift and cannot check the phone? Choose something that does not depend on the iPhone model.

How do I find my iPhone model?

It takes about ten seconds, and it is the step that prevents most fit problems.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Tap About.
  4. Read Model Name. It shows the full name, such as "iPhone 16 Pro" or "iPhone 15 Plus".

Write down every word of the name. "Pro", "Pro Max", "Plus" and "mini" are not small print: each one is a different phone body. The line below, Model Number, shows a part number, and if you tap it you see a code that starts with A. You do not need either code to choose a case. The model name is enough.

If the phone does not switch on, the original box names the model. Apple's support page "Identify your iPhone model" also shows where to find it on each generation.

Why does a case only fit one iPhone model?

A good case is cut around the phone, not stretched over it. Four things have to line up, and they change from model to model.

  • Size: the height, width and thickness of the body. Pro and Pro Max, or the standard model and Plus, differ by more than a case can absorb.
  • Camera: the number of lenses, their arrangement and the size of the camera bump. The opening in the case has to match it exactly.
  • Buttons: newer models added controls, such as the Action button and Camera Control. A case cut for an older model can cover or press them.
  • Magnet ring: on a MagSafe-ready case, the magnet ring sits where the phone's own ring is. On the wrong model, it sits off-centre.

Same leather, same colour, different camera openings: each case is cut for one model.

A firm case is less forgiving than a soft one, and that is deliberate. Cases with a rigid shell, like our Ferrara or Torino, hold their shape and their protective edges because they are cut closely around one model. The same precision means they only fit the phone they were cut for.

Which iPhone names are easy to confuse?

Mix-ups usually happen between models that sound almost the same. Watch these pairs in particular.

Models Will one case fit both? Why not
Pro and Pro Max of the same year No Different body sizes
Standard model and Plus of the same year No Different body sizes
Standard model and Pro of the same year No Different camera layout and number of lenses
iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 No The camera arrangement changed, and the iPhone 16 added the Action button and Camera Control
Same name, different year (for example 16 Pro and 17 Pro) No Camera, buttons and dimensions change between generations

The rule is simple: if any word or number in the model name is different, treat it as a different phone.

What happens if a case is for the wrong model?

Sometimes a case for a neighbouring model seems to go on. It still is not a fit, and the problems show up in use.

  • The camera: the edge of the opening can cover part of a lens or reflect the flash back into the photo.
  • The buttons: a button can be covered, pressed all the time or hard to reach.
  • The hold: a loose case slides on the phone, and a tight one strains at the corners.
  • The protection: raised edges only protect the screen and lenses when they sit in the right place.
  • MagSafe: an off-centre magnet ring gives a weak hold and can slow or interrupt charging. Our MagSafe guide explains how the ring works.

How to check the fit when your case arrives

Before you remove any packaging you might need, put the case on and check five things.

  1. Corners: all four sit flat against the phone, with no gap or bulge.
  2. Camera: every lens and the flash are fully clear, with an even border around the opening.
  3. Buttons: each one presses with a clear click and springs back.
  4. Port and speakers: the cable plugs in fully and the openings line up.
  5. Screen edge: the raised lip runs evenly around the screen and does not touch it.

A leather case that feels snug on day one is normal. Leather softens with use and settles around the phone. A case that will not close over a corner at all is a different matter, and usually means the wrong model.

Do screen and camera protectors depend on the model?

Yes. A screen protector is cut to the shape of the display, and a lens protector to the number and position of the lenses. Our Lens Armor, for example, comes as three individual lens protectors or two, depending on the iPhone model.

Lens protectors are chosen by model too.

Choose the protector for the same model as your case, so the case edge and the protector do not push against each other. See all screen and camera protectors.

Where can I find cases for my model?

Every iPhone case page has a model selector. Choose your model there before adding the case to your cart. You can also start from your model's collection:

Or browse all iPhone cases. If you are choosing between leathers, our guide to the leathers we use explains how each one feels and ages.

Buying for someone else?

An iPhone case is a personal gift, but it is also the easiest one to get wrong. If you cannot check their Settings, you have three options.

  • Find out quietly: the camera tells you a lot. Count the lenses and compare the layout with the photos on the product page. Then confirm the size, because Pro and Pro Max look alike from the back.
  • Choose an AirPods case: it depends on their AirPods, not their iPhone. Our Lecce is made for five generations: AirPods Pro 3, Pro 2, Pro, AirPods 4 and AirPods 3. You still choose the generation on the product page. Lecce is vegan leather, which means a synthetic material, not hide.
  • Choose an Apple Watch strap: straps fit by case size group, not by year. Our Monza and Cremona straps fit 40, 41 and 42 mm, 44, 45 and 46 mm, and the 49 mm Ultra, from Series 4 onwards. One edge case: on Series 10 and later, 42 mm is the smaller size, so it sits in the 40 and 41 mm group.

Our gift guide has more ideas, and our Build your set page puts matching pieces together.

Frequently asked questions

Will an iPhone 17 Pro case fit the iPhone 17 Pro Max?

No. Pro and Pro Max are different sizes. Choose the case for your exact model.

Can I use a case from last year's model on my new iPhone?

We do not recommend it. Cameras, buttons and dimensions change between generations, even when the name only changes by one number.

Where do I find my iPhone model?

In Settings, General, About, next to Model Name.

Does the model number matter when buying a case?

No. The model name, such as "iPhone 16 Pro", is what you need. The model number identifies the version of the phone, not its shape.

My case feels tight. Is it the wrong model?

Not necessarily. A new leather case can feel snug and softens with use. If a corner will not go on, or the camera opening does not line up, it is probably the wrong model.

My model is not listed. What should I do?

Write to us at service@capinifirenze.com with your model name, and we will tell you what fits.

Do all your cases work with MagSafe?

Not all of them. Look for "built-in magnet" or "MagSafe-ready" on the product page. Our MagSafe guide lists which cases have the magnet ring.
