York is not cut from one hide. It is cut from two, and we name which is which — because a leather this specific deserves to be told apart.
Sundown and Ebony come from Charles F Stead, tanning in Leeds, Yorkshire since 1904. The article is their Classic Oiled Shoulder — a full-grain, fully-aniline tannage with a waxed finish, the kind of leather that pulls lighter where it bends. Matte Brown comes from Horween of Chicago, tanning since 1905, in their Crazy Horse finish.
Neither is coated. At close range you can see the pores, which is the whole point: nothing has been sprayed over the grain to make it uniform.
This case carries our five-year guarantee — the promise we extend only to the small group of pieces whose construction we have seen hold up. If the leather separates, the shell cracks or a seam gives way in normal use within five years, we replace it. Not a repair queue, not a credit note: a replacement, sent to you.
The guarantee covers construction. It does not cover the patina — a hide that darkens, lightens at the edges and picks up the marks of being carried is doing exactly what it was tanned to do.
Uncoated full grain shows where the animal lived. Rib creases, neck folds, a healed scar, the mark of an insect bite, the faint line of a vein — these appear, and they are not defects. They are the reason a coated leather looks identical from one piece to the next and this one never will. If you want a surface with no history in it, this is the wrong case.
Wipe with a dry, soft cloth. Waxed and oiled leather darkens with handling — that is the finish working, not wear. Keep it out of standing water and prolonged direct sun. No conditioner is needed in the first months; the hide arrives with its own oils.
