Nanotechnology applied to leather is the use of particles and structures in the range of 1–100 nanometers (e.g., silica, nanoceramics, silicone dendrimers) within the leather finishing process, to form an ultra-thin and invisible layer on the surface.

TECHNICALLY

  • Where it's applied: in the topcoat (finishing layer) and/or in a primer; sometimes through a sol-gel process. The typical thickness is tens to hundreds of nanometers.
  • How it works: these nanostructures lower the surface energy (liquids don’t spread → they form droplets) and increase the hardness/cohesion of the film, improving abrasion resistance and protection against micro-scratches. The addition of UV absorbers/stabilizers slows down yellowing and fading.
