A wallet case promises one object instead of two: your phone and the cards you actually use, in one pocket. For some people it is the best change to their everyday carry. For others it adds bulk, gets in the way of charging, and ends up in a drawer.
This guide weighs it honestly: the types, what they do well and badly, what magnets mean for your cards, and which ones we make. Two of our wallet cases are faux leather, a synthetic material, and we say so wherever they appear.
A leather wallet case is worth it if you carry one to three cards, want to leave your wallet at home, and do not charge on a MagSafe puck every night. It is not worth it if you carry many cards, rely on magnetic accessories, or keep your phone in a back pocket. Choose a flip case if you also want the screen covered, and a rear card pocket if you want the slimmest option.
- The trade-off is capacity against bulk. Most wallet cases hold one to three cards.
- Cards between your phone and a wireless charger are a problem. Take them out, or detach the wallet, before you charge.
- Strong magnets can affect cards with a magnetic stripe, such as some hotel key cards.
- Faux leather is synthetic (PU), not hide. Our Milano Magnetic Wallet and our Faux Leather Wallet Case for iPhone 17 are faux leather.
What types of wallet case are there?
"Wallet case" covers several quite different designs. The type matters more than the material.

| Type | How it works | Cards | Screen covered | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Flip or folio | A front cover folds over the screen; slots sit inside it | Usually two to three | Yes | Pockets and bags, people who want the glass covered |
| Shell with card pocket | A normal case with a pocket on the back | One or two | No | Light carry with the least bulk |
| Detachable magnetic wallet | A separate wallet snaps to the case with magnets | A few, depending on thickness | No | People who want the wallet some days and not others |
| Book folio for a folding phone | The case closes around the phone like a small book | Two | Outer screen covered | Folding iPhones |
What are the advantages of a wallet case?
- One object, not two. Phone and cards leave the house together.
- A flip cover protects the screen in a pocket. On the Genova, the front closes over the glass, so it is not facing keys or coins.
- A built-in stand. Many flip cases fold back to hold the phone for a film or a call.
- Leather suits the job. Cowhide creases and softens where you open it and darkens where you hold it.

What are the disadvantages of a wallet case?

- Bulk. Every card adds thickness. A phone with three cards in a flip case is noticeably thicker than a phone in a slim shell.
- Limited capacity. If you carry six cards and receipts, a wallet case will not replace your wallet.
- Charging gets more complicated. Cards sitting behind the phone can stop wireless charging, and a flip cover adds layers between the phone and a charger.
- Back pockets are a bad idea. The Genova page puts it plainly: sitting on any flip case bends the spine.
- Losing it costs more. If the phone goes, the cards go with it.
Will the magnets in a wallet case damage my cards?
Wallet cases often use magnets, in clasps, flip covers and detachable wallets. Which cards are at risk?
- Cards with a magnetic stripe can be affected by strong magnets. Hotel key cards are the usual example. Our Faux Leather Wallet Case for iPhone 17 notes that its clasp magnets may affect them, and advises keeping such cards away from the clasp.
- Chip and contactless functions do not store data in a magnetic stripe, so a case magnet is mainly a risk for the stripe on a card.
- MagSafe chargers are a separate case. Apple advises never placing cards, badges or key fobs between the iPhone and a MagSafe charger, because this can damage magnetic stripes or RFID chips.
The rule: keep stripe cards away from magnets, and never charge with a card behind the phone. Our guide to MagSafe and leather cases explains how the magnet ring works.

Can you charge wirelessly with a wallet case?
- Detachable magnetic wallet: detach the wallet, then charge. The Milano Magnetic Wallet page says wireless charging works best with the wallet removed, because card layers can interfere with alignment.
- Shell with a rear pocket: the card sits exactly where the charger goes. Take it out before you put the phone on a pad.
- Flip or folio: the cards sit in the front cover, not behind the phone. The Genova page does not mention wireless charging or MagSafe, so we do not promise either.
If you charge on a MagSafe puck every night or use a magnetic car mount, a MagSafe shell such as the Ferrara, with cards kept elsewhere, will serve you better. See our MagSafe stands.

Leather or faux leather: which wallet case should you choose?
Faux leather, also sold as vegan leather or PU leather, is a synthetic material. It is not hide. It looks even, costs less and needs little care, but it does not soften or take on a patina. Real leather does the opposite: it creases where you open it, darkens where you hold it, and shows marks that become part of the surface.
On a case you open many times a day, the difference shows quickly: a leather flip softens at the fold, a synthetic one stays as it was. Our comparison of leather, Alcantara and vegan leather goes deeper, and full-grain vs top-grain vs genuine leather explains the labels on real leather.

Which wallet cases do we make?
Materials as stated on each product page:
| Phone case | Material | Type | Cards | Models |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Genova
|
Genuine cowhide | Flip with magnetic front flap and stand | Three slots and a slim pocket | iPhone 17, 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max, Air, 18 Pro, 18 Pro Max |
Treviso
|
Waxed cowhide | Shell with stitched rear pocket | One or two | Many models from iPhone 11 to iPhone 18 Pro Max (see the selector) |
Torino Oil-Wax Duo
|
Cowhide with an Oil-Wax finish | Book folio for the iPhone Duo | Two slots | iPhone Duo |
Milano Magnetic Wallet
|
Faux leather (PU, synthetic) | Case with detachable magnetic wallet and stand | Varies with card thickness | Choose in the selector |
Faux Leather Wallet Case
|
Faux leather (PU, synthetic) | Folio with dual magnetic clasp and kickstand | Up to three, plus an ID window | iPhone 17 only |
Genova is for people who want the screen covered. The front holds shut magnetically, the case covers front and back, and folded back it stands the phone in landscape. A neutral balm once or twice a year is enough.

Treviso is the slimmest: a shell case in waxed cowhide with a microfibre lining and a pocket for one or two cards, in five colours.
Torino Oil-Wax Duo is for the folding iPhone Duo. The phone sits in a rigid shell on one side, the cover folds over the outer screen, and two card slots sit inside the cover. The Duo unfolds with the case on. The cowhide darkens where your hand rests and lightens along the edges.
Milano Magnetic Wallet and the Faux Leather Wallet Case for iPhone 17 are faux leather, a synthetic PU, not hide. They suit someone who wants a stand and card storage at a lower price, without a surface that ages. The Milano wallet detaches; the iPhone 17 folio has three slots, an ID window and a kickstand. For other synthetic pieces, see our vegan leather collection.
So, is a leather wallet case worth it for you?
- How many cards do you use? One or two: Treviso. Three: Genova. More: keep a separate wallet.
- How do you charge? If it is a MagSafe puck every night, a wallet case will get in the way. Choose a magnetic shell instead.
- Where does the phone live? A front pocket or a bag suits a flip case. A back pocket bends it.
- Do you want it to age? If yes, choose cowhide. If you would rather it stayed the same, the faux leather options do that, and they cost less.

Frequently asked questions
How many cards can a wallet case hold?
Most hold one to three. Treviso holds one or two, Genova has three slots and a slim pocket, and the Torino Oil-Wax Duo has two slots.
Will a magnetic wallet case damage my bank cards?
Strong magnets can affect a magnetic stripe, as on some hotel key cards. Keep those away from magnets, and never charge with a card behind the phone.
Can I use MagSafe with a wallet case?
Not reliably. Cards or a cover between the phone and the charger get in the way. With the Milano Magnetic Wallet, detach the wallet before charging. If MagSafe matters most, choose a magnetic shell instead.
Is the Milano Magnetic Wallet real leather?
No. It is faux leather, a synthetic PU. So is our Faux Leather Wallet Case for iPhone 17. Genova, Treviso and Torino Oil-Wax Duo are cowhide.
How do I care for a leather wallet case?
Wipe it with a dry or barely damp cloth and avoid solvents. On the Torino Oil-Wax Duo, its page says, light scuffs buff out with a thumb. Our care guide goes leather by leather.
